Can you say blacklist?

I have an almost teenager at home. While a good kid, she does at times think that she's ready for the cold, cruel, adult world. Usually my wife and I agree that she is mature enough to handle what may come.

However, when it comes to the internet, we are in disagreement. My wife and I (we're both Technology professionals - and spend too much of our day working with computers) know better than to click on a result in a search engine just because its crafty metadata matches my search terms better than it matches the data it represents. We know because we've watched the internet mature into the wealth of information that it is today.

We also know that a search can have completely unintended results. If you need an example, search for teddy bear. The first page of results might surprise you.

Two nights ago, I build a new firewall. The iptables script that I had been using was at the end of its usefulness. It was slow, and I'm pretty sure that I created a memory leak in trying to enable some of the "features" I wanted.

Now I have ipcop. (latest stable version) The build was really easy despite the doco's tendency to gloss over certain aspects. Ipcop also has some very cool features. If you get yourself a snort account (it's free) it will use available filters and perform IDS scans. It also has good community support for add-on development.

I made a great discovery today. There is an add-on to ipcop that is a url filer. It filters on time, url, category, and client.

Tim used redirection to foil the attempt to myspace.com.

I'll try the "If the NSA can snoop traffic, so can I" approach.
